Power of the Tongue is a riveting, 75-minute, multi-media, one-woman theatrical journey through African American literature and history; performed by Legacy Performance Poet, Ge’ylah. For nearly three decades, Ge’ylah has brought the words of historically celebrated, African American poets and writers to life before collegiate, corporate, community, and religious audiences across the country. Often referred to as a "Poetic Encyclopedia", Ge’ylah's memorized, dramatizations allows audiences to experience these works not merely as poetry on a page, but as a living expression of each writer.
At the heart of Power of the Tongue are the works of African American literary masters such as: Phillis Wheatley, James Weldon Johnson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Claude McKay, Margaret Walker Alexander, Dudley Randall, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez and others. Rather than simply reciting poetry, she seamlessly, creates an immersive experience in which the literature, the history and the poets behind the words become vividly present on stage.
Through picturesque and historical narration, she introduces audiences to the cultural movements and significant events surrounding the period in which the writers lived and created. The historical context gives audiences a deeper understanding of what they are hearing—and why these words mattered.
The multimedia component undergirds the performance. It pairs video snapshots from historic periods, along with carefully selected music which transports audiences into the eras represented in the literature. They see and feel the experience.
Through multiple costume changes, dramatic characterization, movement, voice and commanding stage presence, Ge’ylah transforms herself from narrator to storyteller to character, allowing each literary work to occupy its own emotional space. She flawlessly offers riveting narratives, historical insight and personal storytelling, creating a continuous journey rather than a collection of disconnected recitations. Audiences are not simply introduced to a poet. They are introduced to the world that shaped the poet.
The performance's deeply rooted, educational base supports academic coursework in African American Studies, English and Literature, History, Sociology, Women's Studies and related disciplines. This has built the bridge to providing opportunities for students and faculty to extend the conversation beyond the performance. Post-performance class visits, workshops and masterclasses, allow institutions to deep dive and explore topics, techniques and themes beyond the stage.
Power of the Tongue is a living timeline of African American voice, resilience, creativity and cultural legacy.
It is poetry brought to life.
It is history given a voice.
It is storytelling transformed into theatre.
It is education experienced rather than simply presented.
And after nearly three decades, Ge’ylah continues to demonstrate the extraordinary power of bringing great literature off the page and onto the stage.
